ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Starting from the Municipal Garden, this course leads you to discover the main points of interest within Serpa’s ramparts.

The first fortification worthy of that name was erected under Islamic rule, some sections using military taipa (rammed earth). The vicissitudes of the reconquest of the city by the Christians, finally achieved only on the second attempt, left marks of destruction that lasted until peace was definitely settled, with the new kingdom. It wasn’t until the reign of King Dinis, in 1295, that the crown finally

ordered a great remodelling of the majestic ramparts of this city, so important to the protection of the territory of the left bank of the Guadiana.

Along this route, that can be as long as you wish, you will have the opportunity to discover the rich heritage (architectural, historical-cultural) inside and around the ramparts, where we suggest a visit to the various museums.
