MUSEU DO CANTE

The «Casa do Cante» - established in 2012 in the city of Serpa - is a space dedicated to the protection and promotion of the Alentejo cante as intangible cultural heritage of humanity and was born of the Municipality’s desire to contribute to the promotion of the Southern Identities, given the importance of the intercultural dialogue created by these forms of expression.

THE PROTECTION OF THE CANTE

has been a concern of the Municipality of Serpa for some decades. The “Casa” is one of the entities responsible for the execution of the Plan for the Protection of the Alentejo Cante and was the also the entity in charge of managing the Cante’s application to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity submitted to UNESCO in 2013 by the Portuguese Government - a classification that was awarded to this polyphonic musical expression on 27th November 2014.

The Casa do Cante comprises a documentation centre, a temporary exhibition gallery, an auditorium, a cafeteria and a souvenir shop. At the documentation centre, the visitor can access information on the Alentejo cante as well as bibliography on traditional polyphony in Portugal, the Mediterranean and the World, available in various media.

The temporary exhibition gallery will host annual cycles of exhibitions devoted to the subject of the cante. The auditorium, with 40 seats, offers a programming based on the dialogue between the audience and the artists, domestic or foreign, performing cante and other types of choral music.

The cafeteria and the souvenir shop - Loja do Cante - are relaxation areas where visitors can enjoy and purchase regional products of excellence.
