WHERE TO BUY

FOOD PRODUCTS

In a municipality with a strongly rural nature and tradition, quality products obviously could not be lacking.

Cheeses and queijadas de requeijão, olive oil and olives, wine, cured dry sausages, bread and traditional sweets, honey and herbs and also the freshwater fish are heavily present. Look for local shops, try the restaurants, visit the producers and learn about the production processes.

IN CHEESES ALONE, SERPA’S OFFER IS UNMATCHED

The municipality is part of the PDO Serpa demarcated region and has several certified producers of this cheese of acknowledged quality. However, the offer of this type of product does not stop here and extends to the sheep cheese with different ripening periods, to the requeijão cheese - and the queijadas (pastries made from requeijão) - and to the cottage or cured goat cheese.

The Feira do Queijo (Cheese Fair), held annually on the last weekend of February, is an excellent opportunity to discover and taste all these delicious cheeses.

The famous Alentejo bread, with a long history and tradition in the region, is also well represented in the municipality. This is a folded and lumpy bread, made from wheat flour, with a compact, greyish-ivory crumb and a crunchy crust.

The Alentejo pork ham and cured dry sausages are other local products of reference. The respect for the tradition and the know-how of generations, together with current and innovative technologies, allow the municipality's producers to make sausages and hams of superior quality, popular in both domestic and international markets. Also noteworthy are the "Mangotes de Vila Nova de S. Bento", a local speciality with the "Traditional.PT" certification.

The “Feira do Enchido e do Presunto” (Cured Dry Sausage and Ham Fair), held each year in Vila Nova de S. Bento, in late July, is a great opportunity to discover and try these delicacies.
